My life in music

Australian singer Olympia is already making waves in her home country, but with the release of her infectious new single “Smoke Signals” it looks like Europe won’t have to wait that long to play catch up. We sit down with the burgeoning star to talk through her life in music.

Which pop star did you look up to when you were a child and why?

I looked up to David Bowie. Even as a child growing up on a diet of MTV, I could see and was drawn to the world David Bowie had created and inhabited as an artist.

What was the first album you bought, and what does it say about you?

The first album I bought as a child was Chains, by Australian pop hero Tina Arena. I had actually purchased this as a gift for my sister, and later asked for it back so that I could re-gift it to someone else. I guess this says quite a lot about me, specifically if I give you something, you should make a copy.

What was the first gig you went to?

John Farnham in Australia.

What was the first song you ever performed and can you remember how you felt?

Our Dad made us wooden Flying V guitars and my brother and I performed “Why Does The Devil Have all the Good Music”, for polite family and friends in our lounge room. I distinctly remember feeling earnest. Thankfully I have never played a ‘guitar’ as physically heavy since.

What song always gets you up on the dance floor?

“Decepticon”, by Le Tigre

Which song do you wish you’d written?

“Lover’s Spit” by Broken Social Scene or “Headache” by Frank Black.

Which song makes you cry?

“Running Scared” by Roy Orbison

Who is your musical icon?

David Lynch - who in addition to his film work, (film is my primary source of inspiration) has also put out some incredible music - sparse and dissonant. The David Lynch albums contain this kind of drunk-guy-on-the-train stream of consciousness, that sometimes seems straighter than the rest of us.
