Pop is having a comeback, and at the forefront of the renaissance is Hannah Jane Lewis, the artist intent on bringing sunshine back into our lives. Moving from the UK to Florida as a teen she threw herself into American high school life and alongside cheerleading found a passion for the pop music of Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani. Now back in the UK Hannah’s infectious tracks, including “Why Start A War” and “Raincheck” look likely to set her on the same path as her pop heroes.
I think it influenced me a lot! I had always looked up to the big female American pop stars, and when I got out there I was able to fully immerse myself in that pop culture. I also started listening to country music as it would always be playing in the background out there, and lyrically that inspired me a lot. I love the storytelling nature of it, I'm not sure I would have stumbled on that if I had of stayed living in the UK. I'm like a sponge, I absorb a lot of what is around me so I think location will always in some way effect what I do. But I think my teenage years were particularly influential so maybe I wouldn't have the same sound if I hadn't of moved out there, who knows!
I'm inspired by everything that goes on around me, whether that’s my relationships or conversations that I have with my friends and family about things that happen to them. I also get a lot of inspiration from poems and websites like tumblr/pinterest - photos and phrases act as a jumping off point for me all the time.
Well I think the world is in a pretty hard place right now, and it has been a particularly stressful couple of years for everyone. I don't want my music to be a reminder of all of those things, I want to give people the chance to forget about it for a moment. I have so much respect for artists who use their voice as political outlets and I think it's important that they don't stop doing that, but I think we need a healthy balance of both kind of messages - and it feels natural to me to be keeping things fun and lighthearted.
I've always loved it! I like that it can be fun and colourful and a little outlandish. I also love that there aren't many barriers, I can take risks with lyrics and don’t have to worry about keeping it 'cool’.
My favourite song is 'Teenage Dream' by Katy Perry - in my opinion it is the perfect pop song.
I think that's probably a clue to how much I love pop, it's also fun and it makes me feel super nostalgic. I love the world she created around the whole 'Teenage Dream' album. It makes sense as to why I want to create the same kind of feeling!
The 'Teenage Dream' album by Katy Perry because as I said I think it’s the best pop album ever. 'Room for Squares' by John Mayer because I can listen to his music over and over. Maybe also 'Same Trailer Different Park' by Kacey Musgraves, I love country music and that's my favourite country album by a million miles.
