In our Internet age few musicians can recapture the spirit of soul that made artists like Prince or James Brown into icons, but Cameron Bloomfield might just be the exception. The multi-talented multi-instrumentalist grew up listening to music of all genres, which explains why his latest single, ‘Get In Get Out’ borrows from the funk, soul and R&B of eras past. Add Cameron’s soaring vocals (which fans also heard on Ghetts track ‘Lost’) to the mix and it won’t be along until his is a name at the top of the charts.
I was around a lot of classical music when I was young, especially from my Dad’s side of the family. He had a few classic 80’s records knocking about the house as well, bands like The Police, which got dusted off every now and then and Mum would have some Stevie Wonder or Eva Cassidy on in the car. As soon as I was old enough to know where to find music outside of their records, or what was on the car radio, it was mainly about swapping music with friends, which was a bit of everything, and then going to jam nights around town. Growing up around London, as well, you find yourself surrounded by so many styles and cultures and they all soak up into your pen somehow so the last couple years, especially, has been about really finding the sounds that reflect the environment that I’ve grown up in and continue to grow with.
‘Get In Get Out’ is about finding the real in the all the fakery. We’re bombarded, now, by doctored images, and cries for attention from so many different angles that the pressure to be a certain way, or appeal to a certain type, is so strong and constant. I wanted this to be a breakout from that, to lose the insecurities, and the reluctance to go out and do things for the love, rather than for internet points.
Ghetts is a special guy, and a good friend who I’ve got a lot of love for. He taught me a lot about what it means to be an artist, and about really embracing yourself with no apologies. His passion for music, and its power, is beyond anything I’ve seen before, and lyrically he’s on another level so to be able to learn from someone like him was a real honour!
It’s not really something I’ve given a whole lot of thought to. If anything, I’d like it to be honesty. I wake up every day a slightly different person to the day before, and the world is always changing, so if I can constantly express that evolution as accurately as I see it then I’ll be happy.
My first EP ‘The Night Before’ is out now and my headline show at The Waiting Room, Stoke Newington, London on the 11th December so they’re the two things I’m focused on right now. After that, I’m back wrapping up the next project so we’ll see what 2018 has in store!
