Meet

Avante Black

You may not yet know the name Avante Black but that is soon set to change. The Swedish singer’s attitude laden video for “Make A Mess” is currently propelling her into the limelight, and named as a one to watch numerous times in the past few months, she has already written on tracks for the likes of Lana Del Rey and Tove Lo. We catch up with her to talk style icons and shopping habits.

How does your Swedish heritage influence your music and vision?

Having English as my second language I guess makes me say things differently. A lot of times I say things in a way that would trouble my old English teacher but it works perfectly fine in a song. I also admire a lot of Swedish artists like Karin Dreijer and Dungen.

How important is style to you as a performer?

Style has always been important, I think people like to be able to put their finger on who you are. At the same time it's important to stay true to your self. I still often find myself very lost but I’m starting to accept that it’s ok as long as what you bring out is honest.

Who is your style icon and why?

Cassandra from Wayne's World. She was my first girl crush. Her outfits were amazing, she played guitar and had all the confidence in the world. I wanted to be just like her.

What inspires your fashion choices?

When I was younger all I wanted to be was different. I would have the worst outfit combinations but I’m a lot more chilled now and have given most of my old clothes to charity. Now I buy pieces that I can cherish for life rather than hoarding clothes that I’ll almost never wear. I also think that London is incredible for inspiration, there’s so many different styles and fashions in the city.

How closely linked do you see fashion and music?

It’s amazing getting creative minds together. Like Kansai Yamamoto and David Bowie for example. Both inspiring each other and creating incredible things. I’d say fashion and music are extremely closely linked. Even musicians who hate fashion will probably inspire it somehow.

You can’t escape fashion!

What are you most excited for this year?

Writing and releasing more music. I can’t wait to let these new songs see the light.
