Roses Gabor

London-based artist Roses Gabor was born into a musical family, with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige and the newest tracks on the radio constantly on rotation throughout her home. A natural performer, Roses decided to follow her musical dreams, and after a chance meeting with a member of the Gorillaz at the bank where she worked a day job, those dreams started to become a reality. This meeting resulted in the collaboration “Dare”, which lead to Roses performing with the band around the world. Collaborations with Shy FX and SBTRKT followed, but this year sees Roses step into the spotlight on her own right. In February she released her debut album, Fantasy & Facts, a dreamy blend of soulful R&B and pop inspired by the ups and downs of everyday life and relationships. Roses is set to be catapulted into the spotlight, so get used to her name.

Your career has gone through many stages already, how do you feel your music has evolved in the last year and where do you see it going next?

I see my music continuing to expand, reaching and touching more people every day. Sonically, I honestly won’t know until I get into the studio, but whatever it is it will be an honest expression.

Your debut album Fantasy & Facts was released in February and the tracks are hard to pin to any one genre. What music and sounds do you draw inspiration from?

I’m inspired by many things, most of them are not related to music but I do have a strong connection to ancient chants, R&B and a lot of Bjork’s back catalogue.

You also have played huge gigs singing on Gorillaz tracks, what have those shows taught you as a performer?

They have taught me that the size of the stage is important, but not as important as the energy in the room and the connection between myself and the audience.

Your music videos are highly stylised - how important are visuals and fashion to you as a performer?

Visuals are incredibly important to me. If I want to do something then I want to do it the best that I can. I love film just as much as I love music. I love disappearing into a movie or even a book for a few hours. I aim to create the same feeling, whether it’s in my music or the visuals. Fashion is important to me as it allows me to creatively express myself. I enjoy colour, lux fabrics, textures and jewellery - mostly gold with crystals and semi-precious stones. It’s part of who I am.

What can fans expect for the rest of 2019?

A few shows and festivals at least. Then, I’ve got a few things happening that, unfortunately, I can’t talk about yet but it’s a really exciting time for me - keep an eye on my socials and I’ll share as soon as I can!
